Merk's rant

Starting to look like our illustrious Premier wants to retire from politics…if he doesn’t he may get the boot anyway. HST is so far not that popular, sorry about that on his behalf as dues went up. And then if that wasn’t enough he brings in the new drinking laws that has everyone scared. I do understand the laws for drinking and driving and I am sure you all do to. We do have to be a responsible organization and as we have done in the past we have phoned and or taken away keys and will continue to do so. We as members have to realize that if we over serve someone and they drive home and get into an accident we as a curling club can be held responsible. We could get sued or lose our license or both. There is a lot of pressure on all the bar staff to adhere to this, and now we are not even sure how many beer we should serve before we ask for keys or order a cab. Anyway this really is serious and as a club we need to act in a proper way so that this never happens. We need to come up with some ideas like driving alternative where two people come and pick up someone who has had too much to drink and drive them and their car home. Or we could even hire someone to come to the club and drive those that would like to indulge and pay a fee to be driven home. You can even take a cab…what a novel idea that would be as most cab drives are in the Vernon area and only will cost $10. I kind of like the one where we get a young person that is a member of the club to pick people up at say midnight and drive them home and pay a $10 or $15 fare, yes you would have to find your own way back in the morning to get your car but at least you haven’t driven home and killed someone.

What about car pooling?? Why not designate someone on your team to pick everyone up and take them home at the end of the evening. Here is another idea, why not get your team to come to the club early before you curl and have a few drinks and a nice meal with our new caterers before you curl and then go up after the game and have one or two. A little exercise will get rid of the alcohol and you won’t have to worry about getting nailed for impaired. The food is fabulous and we will even open the bar earlier so you can take your meals upstairs and enjoy yourselves. There is a way to beat this drinking and driving and still be responsible. Personally I like where you get to the club early and have a nice dinner and a few beer and then go curling. You can arrive at the club right after work instead of going home….it would work !!

Anyway enough of the drinking end of things, if anyone has a bright idea please let us all know….

Practice ice….there is lots of time around here to practice, personally I like to practice at noon for a half hour, get a sandwich and a bowl of soup and head back to work. We do have a beautiful kitchen that we should take advantage of it. Jami and Jim are making some great food and their prices are very reasonable. Practice ice will be posted on the Website, right now it looks like every noon hour, and again from 3 till 5pm except Mondays during the week. Weekends are forever changing because of spiels and rentals and juniors etc… stay tune as it will be posted in the office and on web. There is also ice at night from 8:30 till 10 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Anyway it has been a busy start to the year as usual and the office/pro shop is open every evening from 5 to 9 during weekdays….come have dinner and check out what we have in the shop. For those that still have not paid their dues please come and visit us, we would be glad to serve you. Anyway I hope everyone has a great winter of curling. There will be lots happening so stay tuned…
