As winners of the provincial championships and representatives of British Columbia, Team Cotter, consisting of lead Rick Sawatsky, second Kevin Folk, Third Ken Maskiewich, Skip Jim Cotter, fifth Brad Wood and coach Rick Folk will be travelling to London, Ontario to play in the Brier, Canada’s national men’s curling championships. The event takes place from March 5th-13th. The Cotter Rink, ranked ninth in the world by the Order of Merit, will be one of the many very talented teams competing in what is arguably the strongest Brier field ever.

The strength of the participants results in an uphill battle for Cotter and Company, right from the very first draw. In this game, Cotter will face former world champion Jeff Stoughton of Manitoba, a team that he lost to just two months ago in a quarter final that turned into an extra-end thriller. The matches don’t get any easier for the British Columbians, as the following afternoon, they face 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist Team Kevin Martin of Alberta. A mere one hour after that match, the B.C. foursome will look to slide to victory against yet another Olympic Gold Medalist- Brad Gushue of Newfoundland and Labrador. The team must then awake early to play against former world champion and reigning Canada Cup champion Glenn Howard of Ontario, followed by a matchup with 2010 Brier Bronze medalist Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario. To make the playoffs, Team Cotter must sweep to victory in one of these crucial games early in the week, and upset one of the curling heavyweights.

Vernon Curling Club will be hosting a sending-off party for Team Cotter on Wednesday, March 2nd at 7:30 PM, where well-wishers can visit the team before they embark on their quest to capture the Brier. Following the festivities will be a Baron Insurance Super League matchup at 8:30 PM between Jim Cotter and Dave Merklinger. Merklinger himself is a former Brier participant and leader of the Super League standings.

Vernon Curling Club members, especially those in the Junior League (of which he is the well-liked and admired instructor) wish Jim Cotter and his team the best of luck and are hoping that the rink brings home B.C.’s first Brier title since 2000.Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-4166968069935890022011-02-25T13:14:00.000-08:002011-02-27T13:15:04.937-08:00March Happenings...Men’s Provincial was again a success, especially this year with our own Jim Cotter & teammates Kevin Folk, Ken Maskiewich & Rick Sawatsky winning to represent BC at the Brier in London starting next Saturday.

This weekend, the Vernon rink, consisting of skip Jonathan Gardner, third Michael Longworth, second Michael Hiram, lead Jonathan Hatten and coach Mark Longworth, will be playing in Calgary, Alberta at the Canadian Junior Championships. The event is being hosted by North Hill Curling Club and the Glencoe Club from January 29th to February 6th.

Before they left for the prairies, I caught up with the team’s third, Michael Longworth. “I think it was the great team dynamics,” he said of their success at the provincial championships, and hopes this continues in Calgary. When asked what excited him the most about playing in a national event, he responded with a smile, “Pretty much everything, especially the prospect of winning!” Of the challenges to come at the national championships, Longworth states that “The endurance part of it will be a challenge and focusing every game.” This season is the curler’s last as a junior, but this is his first major national event.

Team Gardner starts their quest to the national title on Sunday when they play the team from the Yukon Territory. The last British Columbian team to win the junior national title was the legendary Brad Kuhn rink in 2000, also from the Vernon Curling Club. Today, Kuhn sits at the top of the Baron Insurance Super League standings. Coincidentally, the Kuhn and Gardner rinks played each other shortly after my interview in Super League play. Gardner’s quartet won handily in a 9-7 decision.

Before getting on the ice, Michael Longworth also gave some advice to younger junior curlers and aspiring youth curling stars: “Never give up,” he beams, “I’ve been doing this for 10 years now, and if you want to do it, do it!”Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-77238841762985994782011-01-06T09:26:00.000-08:002011-01-18T09:28:20.702-08:00Merk's rantHappy New Year everyone… Well the season is half over and a lot is about to happen. First off we have a team going to a National Championship…YAHOO ! Jonathan Gardner and his team of Mike Longworth, Michael Hiram, Jonathan Hatten and coach Mark Longworth won the Junior Men’s Championship over the holiday. They are now off to Calgary for the M&M Junior Canadian Championship Jan 29-feb 5th . It will cost a lot of money for this team to participate so I think it would be really nice if each league could hold a 50/50 and give it to the kids. We just need to find a way to help offset their costs. I have a couple of other ideas that can help them out. They are also looking for corporate sponsors, so if anyone would be interested in supporting a junior team…feel free to contact Mark Longworth.

Men’s spiel starts today. We have 48 teams participating and as always it is a fun event. Saturday night we have the GOODS playing, they are an excellent band and all members are welcome to come and enjoy, bring your lady and fill the dance floor.

We are again hosting the Men’s Provincial Feb 7-13 at the curling club. If you would like to volunteer please email the club and we will get your name on the list. As we did last year, anyone that wants to volunteer is welcome to. We have picked out some really nice jackets with the Provincial logo on it. You can volunteer and get a jacket and a pass to the entire event for $50, or you can get free access on the draw that you are volunteering for but you will have to pay for those draws you want to attend to just watch. We also have a live band on the final weekend and anyone that has a pass gets free access. I really think it is worth the $50 for a weeklong pass and a real nice jacket. Email your jacket size to us if you want both.

I am off to St Albert this weekend for the Continental Cup…watch it next weekend on TSN and I will wave to all of you….Lets have a great finish to the year. The mixed spiel this year will be at the end of the season March 25-27 we will be having a live band on both the Friday and Saturday evenings, and a real nice meal Saturday night. It will be a great way to end the season. Cost is $220 email or sign up in the yellow book…

Two talented curling teams from Vernon showed off their curling prowess earlier this month at regional playdowns, earning them each a coveted berth in the 2011 BC Provincial Men’s Championships.

The playdowns (a curling term for a qualifier), hosted by the McArthur Island Curling Club in Kamloops, were held from December 10th to December 12th, featuring men’s teams from across the Interior of British Columbia. Vernon skip Aron Herrick, third Tobin Senum, second Marc Fillion and lead Jason Wizniak started the tournament on Friday with a close 9-8 decision to Tom Buchy of Kimberely in an extra end of play. The Herrick rink’s next two draws against the Dahms and Pierce teams were won by wide margins, allowing them to advance to the final. In the final, Herrick played Kamloops’ Brent Yamada rink. Though the Vernon team got off to an early lead, they were down two points in the tenth and final end of play. However, the Herrick rink sealed the deal by scoring five in the final end, making for a 10-7 score and an undefeated record at the playdowns.

At the same event, another Vernon team saw much success. The rink, consisting of skip Darin Heath, third Gary Vandenberghe, second Ryan Le Drew and lead Darrell Houston, handily won their first two games against the Decap and Griffith rinks. The Heath team ran into some trouble in their third game against Brent Yamada, losing 6-7 in an extra-end thriller. However, the foursome bounced back, cruising to victories against Firman and Buchy. To qualify for the provincials, Heath needed to defeat the Folk rink, skipped by former world champion Rick Folk. The Vernon quartet slid their way into a provincial berth by a score of 8-4, taking the provincial qualifying spot.

As a result of these successes, both of the Vernon-based Herrick and Heath rinks will be playing in the 2011 CDI BC Men’s Provincial Championships hosted by the Vernon Curling Club from February 7th-13th, 2011. Additionally, local curlers Jim Cotter and Rick Sawatsky have already qualified for the tournament as a part of the successful Bob Ursel team, and Vernonite Tyler Orme will be playing as part of the defending champion team of Jeff Richard. The winner of the championships will represent British Columbia at the Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ontario.Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-62223630298573380072010-12-17T09:28:00.000-08:002011-01-18T09:29:37.248-08:00Merk's rantWell, it’s almost Christmas. There will be a sign-up at the bar for rides home at 11pm, midnight and 1am. They can take up to 28 passengers. Tonight is the early bird draw for the raffle. Vernon Curling Club was well represented at regional junior curling playdowns as two local teams swept their way to spots in the provincial championships.

The playdowns, hosted by Salmon Arm Curling Club on the 27th and 28th of November, featured both junior men’s and women’s divisions. The Gardner rink, comprised of lead Jonathan Hatten, second Michael Hiram, third Michael Longworth, skip Jonathan Gardner and coach Mark Longworth, had a rough start to the qualifier and lost their first game in a close match on Saturday. However, they rebounded quickly and curled their way to three consecutive victories by large margins, ultimately winning in a 9-2 final against the Kristjanson foursome of Kamloops, forcing handshakes after just five ends of play.

In junior women’s play, Jenn Gerow’s Vernon rink proved to be on the broom by going undefeated in the playdowns. Lead Vanessa Samborsky, second Melissa Moen, third Kayte Giles, skip Jenn Gerow and coach Brent Giles cruised to a clear victory in their first draw against Alyssa Kyllo that earned the team a place in the final. After falling behind after six ends of play, the Vernon team stole points in ends seven, nine and ten to edge out the Corryn Brown rink of Kamloops 8-6, winning their spot in the provincial championships.

Meanwhile, the playdowns proved to be a challenge for BC Winter Games gold medalist Chad Kyllo and his Vernon rink. Lead Lucas Hofer, second Danial Campbell, third Colby Nowlin, skip Chad Kyllo and coach Steve Campbell had a difficult time hitting their stride on the weekend, losing their first game to Armstrong’s Cliff rink and narrowly giving up their second match against Lumby’s Forester rink. Additionally, a fellow Vernon rink skipped by Kayla Gunner fell to the Alyssa Kyllo team in their third game, missing a qualifying berth this year. Also, well-known former Vernon resident Alyssa Kyllo and her Kamloops rink (coached by CurlBC Club Volunteer of the Year award winner Scott Kyllo) missed the provincial championships this year as well, losing first to Jenn Gerow and then Corryn Brown. Despite the losses at playdowns, the Kyllo siblings, Kayla Gunner and their respective teams are sure to make a splash on the curling scene in the near future.

To keep sharp for playdowns and other tournaments, the Gardner, Gerow and Gunner rinks all play in the Baron Insurance Super League on Wednesday nights, where their skills are put to the test by other expert curlers, including some that have played in the Brier. The experience assists them in their quest towards the provincial title.

As a result of their victories at playdowns this season, the Jonathan Gardner and Jenn Gerow rinks have earned berths in the junior provincial championships being held at the North Shore Winter Club in North Vancouver at the end of December. There, they will aim to represent British Columbia in the Canadian Junior Championships in Calgary, and then play to become the Canadian team at the World Championships in Perth, Scotland, United Kingdom.Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-33067007909120663482010-11-26T09:29:00.000-08:002011-01-18T09:31:10.741-08:00Merk's rantBeen a while since I’ve talked to everybody. A few things that are happening…

Christmas is coming and we are going to have a SALE in the proshop. Everything in-stock will be 10% off. Some of you may think that 10% is not a whole lot of savings. Our prices include HST and shipping and are lower than suggested retail price to begin with. We have a lot of inventory, and new stock is arriving every day. Sale starts Monday Nov 29th.

Most of you know of Andrew Mercer and Cod Gone Wild. He has produced a CD that costs $20 and $5 goes to Junior Curling in our club. Kudos to Andrew and his band for trying to make a living playing music. Cod Gone Wild will be playing at Merk’s Christmas drop-in on Friday December 17th. Open to members and their guests. No cover-charge. Just come & enjoy some festive cheer and music.

The National is coming to town December 15th -19th. We are selling 50/50 tickets. VCC has been given the Thursday 5pm & 8pm draws for 50/50 ticket selling.

We will need 6 volunteers one hour prior to the draw times mentioned about. We can use 12 volunteers, 6 for each if we get enough offers to help. The VCC does receive a portion of the proceeds. Please email me asap if you are interested in selling.

Ice technicians are required to help with installation and maintenance during the event. Please contact me if you want to see how it is all done. I need a total of 12 people. Installation takes place Dec 10th-13th. It will be fun to learn how ice is really made. No experience necessary. Just time. You no longer have to have a RCMP background check so the process is simplified and I am choosing the team. I will be helping with the install. My son, Mike, is the assistant to Mark Shurek the Head Ice Technician for this event.

Junior playdowns are taking place this weekend in Salmon Arm. Vernon is represented by 2 junior mens teams, and 3 junior womens teams..
That’s all for now folks. I’m off to Kamloops to curl in the Labatt Crown of CurlingVernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-47726305579797407332010-10-14T09:42:00.000-07:002011-01-19T09:43:24.141-08:00Merk's rantStarting to look like our illustrious Premier wants to retire from politics…if he doesn’t he may get the boot anyway. HST is so far not that popular, sorry about that on his behalf as dues went up. And then if that wasn’t enough he brings in the new drinking laws that has everyone scared. I do understand the laws for drinking and driving and I am sure you all do to. We do have to be a responsible organization and as we have done in the past we have phoned and or taken away keys and will continue to do so. We as members have to realize that if we over serve someone and they drive home and get into an accident we as a curling club can be held responsible. We could get sued or lose our license or both. There is a lot of pressure on all the bar staff to adhere to this, and now we are not even sure how many beer we should serve before we ask for keys or order a cab. Anyway this really is serious and as a club we need to act in a proper way so that this never happens. We need to come up with some ideas like driving alternative where two people come and pick up someone who has had too much to drink and drive them and their car home. Or we could even hire someone to come to the club and drive those that would like to indulge and pay a fee to be driven home. You can even take a cab…what a novel idea that would be as most cab drives are in the Vernon area and only will cost $10. I kind of like the one where we get a young person that is a member of the club to pick people up at say midnight and drive them home and pay a $10 or $15 fare, yes you would have to find your own way back in the morning to get your car but at least you haven’t driven home and killed someone.

What about car pooling?? Why not designate someone on your team to pick everyone up and take them home at the end of the evening. Here is another idea, why not get your team to come to the club early before you curl and have a few drinks and a nice meal with our new caterers before you curl and then go up after the game and have one or two. A little exercise will get rid of the alcohol and you won’t have to worry about getting nailed for impaired. The food is fabulous and we will even open the bar earlier so you can take your meals upstairs and enjoy yourselves. There is a way to beat this drinking and driving and still be responsible. Personally I like where you get to the club early and have a nice dinner and a few beer and then go curling. You can arrive at the club right after work instead of going home….it would work !!

Anyway enough of the drinking end of things, if anyone has a bright idea please let us all know….

Practice ice….there is lots of time around here to practice, personally I like to practice at noon for a half hour, get a sandwich and a bowl of soup and head back to work. We do have a beautiful kitchen that we should take advantage of it. Jami and Jim are making some great food and their prices are very reasonable. Practice ice will be posted on the Website, right now it looks like every noon hour, and again from 3 till 5pm except Mondays during the week. Weekends are forever changing because of spiels and rentals and juniors etc… stay tune as it will be posted in the office and on web. There is also ice at night from 8:30 till 10 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Anyway it has been a busy start to the year as usual and the office/pro shop is open every evening from 5 to 9 during weekdays….come have dinner and check out what we have in the shop. For those that still have not paid their dues please come and visit us, we would be glad to serve you. Anyway I hope everyone has a great winter of curling. There will be lots happening so stay tuned…Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-13786138704177955552010-09-07T08:40:00.000-07:002011-01-26T08:44:16.978-08:0010-11 RegistrationLeague registration night is FAST approaching… 7pm Monday September 13th.
Just a few things I want to mention. Registration is Monday September 13th at 7pm. The AGM is on Friday September 17th at 7pm. This will coincide with an awards presentation to all club champions from previous year, we have jackets to present so you had better come if you want them.

The next day Saturday September 18th we will be having our second annual Golf Tournament. It will be a shotgun start at 2:30 at Royal York followed by dinner back at the club. I can’t believe summer is almost over….anyway enjoy the rest of itVernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-67396779628206312252010-05-19T08:52:00.000-07:002011-01-26T08:57:40.620-08:00Merk's rantHere’s the happenin’ news from the Vernon Curling Club…

FIRST, and probably the biggest thing that is going to happen over the summer is the renovation of the proshop/office, concession and locker rooms. The plan is in place to:
- expand the proshop/office by 6 feet (into the existing concession)
- knock out the wall into the ladies locker room to expand the concession and upgrade the existing equipment
- redesign the two locker rooms which will enable us to add additional lockers.

We want to start construction by June 7th and we NEED your help. The biggest part will be to gut the area and relocate the walls. Please email the club if you are available to help tear things out. With any luck we can get the bulk of the tear down done in 3 or 4 days.

We are also looking for trades to help with the renovation… drywall, painting, framing, etc. A lot of this work can be done by volunteers which will help keep our costs down. Email me!

Our 2010-11 season starts Monday September 14th with registration. The AGM will be held on Friday September 17th. Watch for details, as this will be more than just an AGM; you won’t want to miss it! Golf tourney on the 19th, clinics starting on the 27th and our annual Twin Anchors Invitational Cash Spiel Sep 30th - Oct 3rd, immediately followed by the beginning of league play.

Kevin Koe’s team is coming to town once again for the Twin Anchors Cashspiel. They are the reigning World Champions! We also expect the likes of Cheryl Bernard, and many other top teams. This is one of the clubs biggest events. We put on an excellent show and attract the best players from across Canada & around the world.

Did you know we are hosting the 2011 CDI Men’s Provincial Championships, February 7-13th. This is the first time that CurlBC has awarded this championship to the same city two years in a row. Definitely a feather in VCC’s cap… and I owe thanks to you! As always our members put on a grand show and I trust that we will make this event even bigger & better than this past season.

Volunteer and sponsorship are required to ensure these events continue to be successful. The survival of the Vernon Curling Club is dependent on events like this. Please email the club with your interest in volunteering. We need officials, hospitality, ceremonies, security and airport transportation. Sponsorship opportunities can be catered to accommodate your company with exposure to residents of Vernon and beyond, through signage, television and/or newspaper coverage. Please email if you think we can work together to build a mutually beneficial relationship.

You have probably heard that the City of Vernon and the Wesbild Centre are hosting ‘the National’ (part of the Grand Slam of Curling) in December. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase Vernon, yet again on the national stage for curling. While the Vernon Curling Club is not directly involved in organizing or financially benefitting from the event, I welcome you to contact the Wesbild Centre directly at 250-542-5623 for volunteer opportunities. Watch the local newspaper for updates and information or www.wesbildcentre.ca.

If you’re driving by the club, stop in and say hi! Bring a coffee or buy me a beer!

Happy golfing/boating/camping… whatever you do this summer!Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-34510484428318393572010-01-30T09:40:00.000-08:002011-01-19T09:52:26.414-08:00Merk's rantWell, here we go again. As everyone I am sure knows by now, we are hosting the Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Provincial Curling Championship. We have spent the past few days setting up the curling rink to showcase this event and it looks FANTASTIC! You will not recognize your curling rink. The winner of this event advances to the Brier to represent BC in Halifax NS in March 2010.

The event officially starts Monday with the first draw at noon. Teams will be practicing Sunday from 2-5pm. Feel free to drop by and have a drink and watch the team’s practice. There is no charge to watch on Sunday. Event passes covering Monday through Sunday’s final game costs $50 or $10 for a day pass. The curling will be top notch. Our very own Jim Cotter will be playing with Team Ursel and Tyler Orme with Team Richard. There are also a few ex-Vernonites, Rick Sawatsky, Brendan Willis and Chris Anderson.

There is a link from our website front page to the Playdowns.com website where the line-scores, teams, etc will be shown. In addition there will be a live chat happening during the draws. If you can’t make it down to the club to watch the action, login and read as the games progress.

Friday night we see the return of the Goods, after popular showing during the Men’s spiel. Saturday night, Mercer & Pete will be performing a little celtic music. A week pass or a Friday / Saturday day-pass is your ticket to the action that day. $5 will be charged to those coming into the club after 9pm on Friday and Saturday. The entertainment will begin immediately following the conclusion of the 7pm games (approx 9:30pm).

There is seating on-ice as well as bleachers upstairs & down. Canadian Direct Insurance has been kind enough to provide fleece blankets for those choosing to sit amongst the action on-ice. These are loaner blankets and not for you to take home.

We are looking forward to hosting another fantastic event. Thanks to those that have volunteered, and for the community’s supportVernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-910434055508827972010-01-01T09:39:00.000-08:002011-01-19T09:52:47.848-08:00Merk's rantAnother year has come and gone, hope everyone had a good one. Here we come… 2010. It is going to start out very busy, at least for me. We have the Men’s Spiel next weekend with 44 teams signed up. Sure would be nice to get to 48 as it makes for a perfect draw. Deadline for entries will be Monday. On Saturday evening of the Mens Spiel we have the GOODS playing, they are an excellent band. All you ladies come down and grab a Man and dance. On the Saturday night we will also be doing the Draw for the Twin Anchors Houseboat Vacation. If you haven’t got a ticket yet get it next week. Regular league curling starts this Sunday, here we go again.

The French Mens team will be arriving on the 5th of January. This is the same team that will be competing in the Olympics. They will be making Vernon their home for a month to train for the Olympics. They need practice games and bonspiels etc….if anyone wants to set up challenge games it would be appreciated. They are also looking for accommodations, problem is there are 6 of them. If you know of someone that has a house to rent for a month let me know. Maybe someone has a large house and they could billet them. They are really nice guys, so let’s show them a good time while they are here.

Men’s Provincials are around the corner. It all starts February 1st . Two teams have already been declared: Sean Geall from the Coast who was last year’s champion and Bob Ursel from Kelowna who has our own Jim Cotter throwing last rocks at the top CTRS points winner. We have a couple of men’s teams competing in the Interior Zones (16 teams, 4 advance to the Provincials). Good luck to Brad Kuhn & Tyrel Griffith and teammates. In the next week or so we will get organized with all the volunteers and get this show on the road.

The Olympics are just around the corner and soon Wayne and I will be gone. One Two will be taking care of the ice during our absence. I am sure it will be a fantastic experience for both of us. It has been a long 3 years waiting for this to finally arrive…try not to miss us too much. If you see something that needs to be done around here please jump in and lend a hand.

Junior teams, Jenn Gerow and Jon Gardner played a fantastic provincials, both earning byes to the final games. Both fought hard in the final game, but were both unceremoniously dumped in the final, which is too bad. They have worked so hard; hopefully they will all be eligible for Juniors next year. The Gunner team finished with a record of 3-4. Congratulations to you kids and we were all really pulling for you.

Our inaugural 2 on 2 spiel was a great success with 18 teams, with the father-son act of Scott & Chad Kyllo winning the first annual 2 on 2. They defeated TJ Perepolkin and Darren Heath in the final game. The curling was excellent throughout the event. The format worked well and I trust that next year we can fill it with 24 teams. I anticipate a waiting list. Fun time had by all.

Last but not least, attached is our advertisement for our Saturday nights. We are running both an 8-week league and a drop-in. It starts this Saturday, January 2nd at 6:30pm. Call or email for more details.Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-89379560402291198362009-12-09T09:37:00.000-08:002011-01-19T09:38:04.642-08:00Merk's rantGreetings from Edmonton Hope you are enjoying the action from the 'Road to the Roar'. There is a game every draw televised on TSN and also on CurlTV. The curling has been great and it will be very exciting to see who comes out Top Dog and represents Canada at the 2010 Olympic Games in February.

We invite all club members to come out and lend a hand hosting what I know will be the best run Mens Provincial event (because Vernon always does the best!). We need volunteers to assist with door, 50/50, hospitality, driving, officiating & set-up & take-down. Volunteers will gain entrance to the venue on their day of duty to take in the action either before or after their shift. i.e. work an evening draw, come watch the noon draw, or work the noon draw and watch the evening draw. There will be two draws a day (noon & 7pm) Monday through Thursday with an adjusted schedule on Friday and Saturday to accomodate possible tie breakers and playoffs. Finals go Sunday at 10am. In addition, volunteers will be offered an embroidered 'event' article of clothing at cost. For those not able to volunteer, full-event passes can be purchased for $50 and day-passes will be available for $10 Monday through Thursday, with a weekend pass (Fri, Sat & Sun) available for a cost of $35.

The raffle tickets are selling like hot cakes! Have you got yours yet? Tickets cost $5 each or 3 for $10 and are available at the bar or office. Early bird prize of an event pass for the Mens Provincials will be drawn during Merk's drop-in on December 18th. The Grand Prize of a cruise on a Twin Anchors Cruisecraft IV Houseboat (view here http://www.twinanchors.com/vacation/houseboat-rentals/cc4.php) will be drawn on the weekend of the Mens Bonspiel (Jan 7-10). The Houseboat is available from April 1 - early July or end of August - October 31st (mid & low season, excluding long weekends.) Spring time days are warm with crisp evenings, and fishing is excellent. Late summer promises the warmth of the lake and quiet beaches. The houseboat comes equipped with hot tub & fireplaces to keep you cozy. Your choice of 3 nights on a weekend, or 4 nights mid-week. This boat sleeps 14 and features two full bathrooms and a full home theatre. Get together with your team or a group of friends and buy a book, and you could be cruisin' the Shuswap next summer! Proceeds from the raffle will go towards hosting the Men’s Provincials. It’s our chance to shine, and we want to put on the best show possible.

Have you heard about the 2 on 2 bonspiel? Get a partner and sign up! December 27, 28 & 29th. Rules & details are posted at our website (www.vernoncurlingclub.com). Cost $100. It's a great way to keep your game-on and stay tuned-up for the New Year.

And, last but not least, I sure hope your planning to attend the Club Christmas party, affectionately known as Merk's Christmas Drop-in, on Friday December 18th. Come join me in a celebrating the festive season with a glass of 'nog and while you're here, enjoy a little Maritime Christmas flair with Mercer and Pete! Help needed with door and 50/50, hospitality, officiating & setup/take down. We’re also taking entries for the Men’s (Jan 7-10) & Mixed (Feb 12-14) spiels.

Remember to bring out your friends & family Saturday nights for the $5 drop-in starting at 6:30pm. Carol Martel & Dean Banks are looking forward to an evening of fun & frivolity. Maybe you’re just looking for another game night, or want to introduce the game of curling to a few friends. Either way, its sure to be great. Let’s try to fill all 8-sheets!

Did you know we had over 600 students participate in our school program last season? Do you have some free time on Mondays during the day? It’s a great introduction to the game for these kids. We need help with instruction. You don’t have to be certified, you just need a love for the game. Call Heather at the office for more info.

Please refer to the front page of our website www.vernoncurlingclub.com for available practice ice times.

On a final note, please, if you are going to cancel a game, not only should you call your opposition, but please let the club know so that your sheet of ice does not get prepared unnecessarily.
See you when I return next week!Vernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-8518040006260385852009-11-02T09:07:00.000-08:002011-01-26T09:13:04.382-08:00Liven' up Saturday nightsI’m headed out of town to do the ice for the pre trials in Prince George. Check out the website and follow the teams, including Jim Cotter. I will be back on November 15th. In the meantime, if you see something that needs to be done, lend a hand. My staff are geared up to do their best, please help them out. If you need assistance phone Heather or Lorraine at the office or leave a message.

We will be starting to sell raffle tickets for a Twin Anchors luxury houseboat cruise. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Proceeds will go towards the cost of hosting the Men’s Provincial Curling Championships from February 1-7. We are also starting to take names for volunteers for the event. We need officials, 50/50 and door help and hospitality. Also we will need help setting up the ice area and the bleachers.

Saturday nights at the club are generally very quiet evenings. We’ve been trying to figure out a way of getting new members into the club. We are going to have drop-in adult curling on Saturdays starting November 14th at 6:30pm. Cost is $5 per person per session. This is open to members and anyone that wants to try the game. So if you have some friends, bring them down. Half hour of instruction followed by a 6-end game. We provide the brooms & sliders, all they need to do is carry a clean pair of running shoes with them. Carol Martel and Dean Banks are heading up this new adventure, but will require help with instruction. So if you have experience, and are bringing out new people, please offer your assistance to others. Attached is an information sheet. Share it. Print a copy and post it on your work bulletin board, or at the gym. Email it to your friends and family. With any luck we can create some more interest in curling.

Our hometown boy TJ Perepolkin will be playing Glenn Howard 6pm Thursday. On the ladies side we have Denmark, Russia, Switzerland and Japan who will be participating in the Olympics along with Canadians Kelly Scott, Shannon Kleibrink and Cheryl Bernard who will be in the hunt to represent Canada at the Olympics. It should be a fantastic show, we need your support. We depend on our members and friends to come down and cheer on these curlers. The action starts this Thursday at 3pm with three draws (2pm, 6pm & 9pm) continuing through Friday, Saturday with playoffs on Sunday (Finals 3pm). Passes are $35 for all 4 days, day pass $12 available at the door. Check the website for draws and details.

We have a good core of volunteers that are going to help us with the Cashspiel, we need a little help with vehicles and/or drivers. If you have a van, and are available Wednesday, Thursday and/or Sunday to make trips to & from the airport please let us know. We pay for gas and maybe a timmies or two. It’s a great way to chat with these curlers one on one. I could really use your help. Call or email the club if you can help.

Clinics for Intermediate and Beginner curlers start Monday evening. The intermediate clinic runs for 3 nights, 6:30-8:30 Mon, Tue & Wed, including a strategy session with Linda Moore on Wednesday night. Cost is $35 for all three nights. If you just want to join the strategy clinic on Wednesday night, cost is $12. Beginner clinic runs Mon & Tues night at the same time, cost is $25. A great introduction to the game of curling.

Leagues start the week of October 5th, with the exception of SuperLeague which plays their first game September 30th.

Ice is now in, looks great. We have a new look compliments of Canadian Direct Insurance. Come on down and take a look. The best time to practice is Monday or Tuesday until 5pm, or anytime Wednesday. There is no available practice ice from 5pm to 8:30pm Mon or Tuesday (due to clinics) or from Thursday through to Monday. It’s not necessary to book ice. Come as you wish, but be willing to share your sheet with others.

The Ladies Silver Star Bonspiel goes Oct 23-25th. Put a ladies team together for this great season opener.

Just a little update as to what is happening at the club. The upstairs lounge ceiling is in the process of being repainted. After that we will be covering the main beams in cedar. Then, in the month of August we will be replacing the carpet & the dance floor. If you are in the neighbourhood drop by and take a look.

In the meantime, a week ago FUNTASTIC offered the curling club the opportunity to host the 50/50 during their tournament this weekend, with all proceeds coming to the curling club. We scrambled to get the license & the tickets printed & t-shirts made…all in one short week. Now we need some volunteers. It starts this Friday, June 27th. We know this is short notice, but we feel it will be beneficial for the curling club, and something we can hopefully do in years to come.

The following shifts are available: (at DND site)
Fri Jun 27 – 4pm to 8pm
Sat Jun 28 – 11am to 4pm and 4pm to 8pm
Sun Jun 29 – 11am to 4pm and 4pm to 8pm
Monday Jun 30th (tentatively) – 11am to 4pm only

We’re also looking for some dayshift people to flog tickets at Kin Park and Grahame Park. If you live near one of these parks, this would be ideal for you.

We weren’t given a lot of time to get this organized, but we’re going to do it and raise money for the club. We could use your help. Parking & event day Passes will be provided for your shift. Those working the later shifts will be able to stay afterwards for the evening entertainment.

Please email the club if you have some time to spareVernon Curling Clubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919571876362008080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2562391784743781467.post-62884826277582685182008-03-16T09:29:00.001-07:002011-01-26T09:30:38.681-08:00Merk's rantWell, you know what, for my first year here, I thought it was a good year. I hope you have enjoyed the curling season, as much as I have enjoyed being a part of the Vernon Curling Club. My staff worked real hard this year to help to make things go as smooth as possible. And as always, there is room for improvement. All in all it was a successful year and I hope you feel the same and I am really looking forward to coming back next year.

We’re winding down the season with the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship. I am sure everybody knows the dates and what’s involved. As a special feature, this year, we will be hosting the finals of our Curling Club Championships on arena ice at the Wesbild Centre (Multiplex) on Thursday March 20th Teams are as follows:

SuperLeague – Sexton vs Cotter
Mens – Geistlinger vs McDougall
Ladies – Vedan vs Gaudet
Mixed – Laface vs West

Doors open at 6pm. The teams will have short practice and then will be piped onto the ice at 6:25pm. Games begin at 6:30pm. It would be really really neat for all these people playing to have lots of spectators cheering them on. At the conclusion of the games the plan is for everybody to come back to Keith’s Patch which is being held in the rink area at the VCC. There will be a live band, the Kings, and admission is free for everyone. Minors not permitted after 9pm.

I hope everyone understands how the Keith’s Patch works for the worlds. Only ticket holders or volunteers are permitted access. This does not necessarily mean you will be turned away. If there is room in the Patch, and you tell the door people you are a VCC member you will be allowed into the Patch, providing we do not exceed capacity. This event is very important to the City of Vernon and the VCC so we are going to put on a great show. I do encourage all of you, if you haven’t yet, to buy a ticket or two and experience the action live while it’s being broadcast around the world. It’s a really neat experience. I am involved on the ice, if you see me working on the ice holler down to me “Hey Merk! How ya doin?”. This event is a great way to end my first season as Manager/Ice Tech at the Vernon Curling Club.
