Merk's rant

Here’s the happenin’ news from the Vernon Curling Club…

FIRST, and probably the biggest thing that is going to happen over the summer is the renovation of the proshop/office, concession and locker rooms. The plan is in place to:
- expand the proshop/office by 6 feet (into the existing concession)
- knock out the wall into the ladies locker room to expand the concession and upgrade the existing equipment
- redesign the two locker rooms which will enable us to add additional lockers.

We want to start construction by June 7th and we NEED your help. The biggest part will be to gut the area and relocate the walls. Please email the club if you are available to help tear things out. With any luck we can get the bulk of the tear down done in 3 or 4 days.

We are also looking for trades to help with the renovation… drywall, painting, framing, etc. A lot of this work can be done by volunteers which will help keep our costs down. Email me!

Our 2010-11 season starts Monday September 14th with registration. The AGM will be held on Friday September 17th. Watch for details, as this will be more than just an AGM; you won’t want to miss it! Golf tourney on the 19th, clinics starting on the 27th and our annual Twin Anchors Invitational Cash Spiel Sep 30th - Oct 3rd, immediately followed by the beginning of league play.

Kevin Koe’s team is coming to town once again for the Twin Anchors Cashspiel. They are the reigning World Champions! We also expect the likes of Cheryl Bernard, and many other top teams. This is one of the clubs biggest events. We put on an excellent show and attract the best players from across Canada & around the world.

Did you know we are hosting the 2011 CDI Men’s Provincial Championships, February 7-13th. This is the first time that CurlBC has awarded this championship to the same city two years in a row. Definitely a feather in VCC’s cap… and I owe thanks to you! As always our members put on a grand show and I trust that we will make this event even bigger & better than this past season.

Volunteer and sponsorship are required to ensure these events continue to be successful. The survival of the Vernon Curling Club is dependent on events like this. Please email the club with your interest in volunteering. We need officials, hospitality, ceremonies, security and airport transportation. Sponsorship opportunities can be catered to accommodate your company with exposure to residents of Vernon and beyond, through signage, television and/or newspaper coverage. Please email if you think we can work together to build a mutually beneficial relationship.

You have probably heard that the City of Vernon and the Wesbild Centre are hosting ‘the National’ (part of the Grand Slam of Curling) in December. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase Vernon, yet again on the national stage for curling. While the Vernon Curling Club is not directly involved in organizing or financially benefitting from the event, I welcome you to contact the Wesbild Centre directly at 250-542-5623 for volunteer opportunities. Watch the local newspaper for updates and information or www.wesbildcentre.ca.

If you’re driving by the club, stop in and say hi! Bring a coffee or buy me a beer!

Happy golfing/boating/camping… whatever you do this summer!
